Lieutenant General W.R. van der Riet, SSA, SM, MC

Lieutenant General Werndly Renaut "Booysie" van der Riet, SSA, SM, MC joined the Field Force battalion in 1940. He served as WR/DLR Second-in-Command in 1945 under Lt Col. Jack Bester and was appointed OC of WR/DLR from 1945 until 1946. In 1926 he was transferred to 2 Bn SSB as Officer Commanding and attended Staff Course in Britain in 1947. He held several cammand appointments before being appointed to the General Staff HQ in 1965.  He Retired in 1974. He later served as Honorary Colonel from 1985 until his death in 1988.

He was awarded the following medals:

  • Order of the Star of South Africa (SSA) for Meritorious service.
  • Southern Cross Medal (SM) for Meritorious service.
  • Military Cross for Bravery (MC)
  • Various campaign medals for the Second World war.
